On the first day, and thereafter, students should wear shorts or some other form of loose-fitting bottoms. Most childrens wear t-shirts. As for shoes, beginners should wear socks that stay up on their feet. You are obviously not expected to have dance shoes the first day of class, but if the child has taken a prior type of dance with soft shoes, those shoes may be used. Tennis shoes are also ok. Bring plenty of water as he or she will be able to take water breaks throughout class. Please make sure they are not chewing gum, and if possible, have not eaten a meal recently. For the first few lessons, your child will receive personal instruction until he/she learns the basics of Irish Dance. After he/she has reached a certain comfort level, the instructor will integrate the child into the larger class. Everyone begins with the light jig, then moves to reel, then slip jig, then hard shoe. It takes at least a year to move to hard shoe. |
